Happy Kwanzaa!

Kwanzaa is 7-day African American and pan-African holiday starting from December 26 to January 1 that celebrates family, community and culture.

The holiday is named from the Swahili phrase 'matunda ya kwanza,' which translates to 'first fruits', and during this time families and communities come together to celebrate with feasts, exchanging of gifts, and other activities focused around the seven principles of Kwanzaa also known 'nguzo saba' in Swahili.

The seven principles of Kwanzaa are Umoja (Unity), Kujichagulia (Self-Determination); Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility); Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics); Nia (Purpose); Kuumba (Creativity) and Imani (Faith).

The 7 principles of Kwanzaa are represented as 7 seven candles (the mishumaa saba) featuring the Kwanzaa colours black, red, and green where black symbolises the people, red symbolises their struggle, and green symbolises the future hope that comes from that struggle.
